This paper mache mask is a small version of large masks worn during festivals in Puerto Rico. They represent spirits, called vejigantes, that scare off the devil and are a big part of Puerto Rican culture. This mask was given to the owner by her father since she used to tell tales as a child about them. The owner keeps it displayed as a way to have a part of her hispanic culture visually present. This is also representative of one of the many backgrounds hispanics on the Miami campus may identify with.
